Photoshop for beginners - the 3 essential command levels

Many beginners Photoshop learn, use the command levels, but never really understand exactly how it works. In this article I will explain the three main aspects that you need to understand to effectively use the levels command.

What makes the layer command?

Level command is used to adjust the overall contrast of the image. It is also used to customize the distribution of the intermediate tones in the image area.

The layer command is used to the overall contrast of change:

(1) Set the first note in the image to be pure black.

This is called the black level. Let's say you have some dark tones in the photo with the pixel values of 20, 15, 10 and 5 (5 is the darkest since black is null). You set the black point slider (move it to the right) in the layer dialog box input value of 10, then the dark clay with a pixel value of 10 will be changed so that it has a value of 0 (zero), and is pure black. But, all pixels with a value of less than 10 also pure black are made. In our example, the sound with pixel value 5 will also pure black. In this case, you will lose actually valuable shadow detail. Of course, the other dark shades in the value reduced proportionately.

(2) Set the first note in the image should be pure white.

This is called the white point. Much like in the example above but using the lightest tones that you have with light tones of 240, 245, 250 pixel values (white has a pixel value of 255), and you move the Weißpunktschieberegler links in the dialog, so it has an input value of 245; This pixel value will be changed to 255 and are pure white. Sounds with pixel values between 245 and 255, which means our pixels by 250, are also as pure white.

The layer command is used to moderate contrast of change:

3. Setting of medium grey tone point.

The gray slider below the graph displayed histogram see my article on understanding the histogram in the layer dialog box that controls the distribution of the nuances. This is known as the grey point or gamma of the image. If you move this slider let Photoshop, change the values of all of the tones between black and white (but not the actual black or white tones). Whichever sound you align, the slider below are changed, become a middle gray value of 128. So, if you move the slider to the left under the histogram, you will brighten all the tones between black and white. Conversely, if you move the slider to the right, you will obscure all the sounds.

By adjusting the black and white endpoints, we change the overall contrast in the image. This is soft most in contrast, for photographs, low lighting, such as on a cloudy day is found used. Care should be taken are not too many of the darkest and will lose to lose lightest tones, such as the subtle details. By adjusting the gray point, we change the values of the gray tones; either lighter or darker.

You have the three essential fundamentals by using the command levels in Photoshop. The levels, the command the simplest tools is the tone control use and with the understanding you have now, you can use it much more safely.
